Dr. Elizabeth Gregory, Director of the University of Houston's Women's Studies Program and author of Ready: Why Women Are Embracing the New Later Motherhood hosted the museum's Brown Bag Gallery Tour Wednesday and engaged more than 30 visitors in a discussed that drew a parallel between Akerman's artistic practice and the changing structure of women's lives today. To Gregory, Akerman's reconfiguration of a linear, cinematic structure---a story arc with a beginning, middle, and end---and changing it into a much more fluid structure, makes sense. In her own research, resulting in Ready, Gregory uncovers increasingly creative ways that women see the timeline of their own lives, often building families within a very different timeline than that of their mothers and grandmothers.
As our lifestyles evolve, so does the art around us. Or is it the other way around?
