Many of you may remember the James Surls exhibition at Blaffer in 2005. It was a major exhibition for us, with a catalogue published by the University of Texas Press, and for the artist, who lists the exhibition amogst the three most important of his career on his website.
Well, this weekend, Surls will debut three new works at Barbara Davis Gallery in the gallery complex at 4411 Montrose. There will be a reception on Saturday from 11 am to 3pm. Come one come all to celebrate one of Texas's premier artists. Here's the skinny again:

According to the Press Release:
"James Surls is one of the preeminent artists that the state of Texas has produced. James has been shown and collected by the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY , The Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C., Lowe Art Museum, Miami, FL, Museum of Modern Art - New York, NY , Menil Collection, Houston, TX, and Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, CA. His anthropomorphic forms made of wood, carved and burned, are intellectually challenging and visually compelling. The series of 3 New Works of James Surls uses the flower as a metaphor. The flower has been an integral inspiration in the practice of the artist. One of the works Variegation, steel and poplar wood, will expand across the gallery wall 12 feet wide by 8.5 feet tall. "
