The Armadillo Rolls into Town

Have you ever wondered what has been done with the surplus of white trailers FEMA put in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina? Jae Rhim Lee, a visiting lecturer in the Department of Architecture and Visual Arts Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found a creative use for one of those trailers. She and a team of students researched the surplus of white trailers, and designed and renovated a donated FEMA surplus trailer turning it into a self sustaining rolling garden they call the Armadillo. Jae Rhim Lee is an artist and permaculture designer who spent time in 2007 and 2008 studying soil remediation and food security in Louisiana. Seeing the surplus of trailers on a daily basis gave her the idea for the rolling garden. After the completion of their project, they donated the Armadillo to a California non-profit group dedicated to visual arts. The Armadillo is currently on its way from Boston, MA to California. It will be making a stop in Houston on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney. Admission is free, and viewing is from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. To read more about this story visit: www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ent/arts/theater/6503480.html.
