Ground Rules

Greeted by Mr. Patrick Renner, kids taking part in Summer Arts learned that they were about to embark upon an Archeological Dig. They were given a bag of tools and a set of ground rules. Kids were to dig in teams of two, with one person wielding a spoon and the other carefully dusting the find. Each archeologist designed a logo for his or her hat—one students’ hat optimistically read, “Ground Rules!” Back at the excavation site, the kids went to work. With a careful enthusiasm, they uncovered their finds and documented them in their sketchbooks, recording mysterious pieces of plastic, foreign coins, a test tube containing glossy pebbles, parts of old toys, buttons, empty egg cartons, and even bits of pasta—the kids artifacts were made up of everything under the sun. “When you hit water, you are done,” cautioned the Chief Archaeologist as he first sighted the tarp’s blue surface. Everyone took their finds inside and assembled their artifacts, constructing their histories. The day was a success!
